THE HYDROGRAPHICAL OFFICE (publishers of the first official admiralty surveys) was founded in 1795 and its first and probably one Of its ablest directors was Alexander Dalrymple.

Before the establishment of the Hydrographic Office, charts were published privately by their compilers or purchased from commercial marine publishers. Dalrymple, like Captain Cook, published many of his own charts.

The following notes are from the early period ofDalrymple's career and were originally collected by Mr Herbert Edwards, (a director of Francis Edwards Ltd., Rare Book and Map Dealers in Marylebone High Street, London, who died last year) over a long period and were given to me on his retirement in 1970. They are now published as a tribute to his memory.

Many of the items are of great rarity. Lieutenant Commander David RN, has compiled a catalogue of the charts published by Dalrymple after his appointment to the Admiralty and is engaged on a more extensive survey of Dalrymple's charts.

The items listed have been checked against the holdings in the British Library and personal notes of my own. For a full account of Dalrymple's life see Alexander Dalrymple and the Expansion of British Trade by Howard T. Fry. Published for the Royal Commonwealth Society by Frank Cass, London, 1970.
