Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam wins Turing Art Grant 2009

On Monday 26 May 2009, the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam was announced as the first time winner of the Turing Art Grant 2009. The winner was donated €450.000 in order to realise their exhibition proposal ‘Mike Kelley, a retrospective 1973-2010’, which will be held in the summer of 2010.

The shortlist of nominees were, of the sixteen applications, were Foam_Fotografiemuseum Amsterdam¸Van Gogh Museum Amsterdam and Stedelijk Museum de Lakenhal in Leiden. Director Gijs van Tuyl of the Stedelijk Museum, and his team, proudly received their price from the major of Amsterdam, Mr. Job Cohen.

Turing Art Grant is awarded every two years to a Dutch museum for an exceptional exhibition plan. The aim of the grant is to challenge Dutch museums to compose an outstanding art exhibition that otherwise could only be found abroad.

The Turing Foundation was established in 2006 by Pieter Geelen, using the wealth he acquired as co-founder of TomTom NV, a company listed at the Dutch stock exchange. The Turing Foundation focuses on four different themes: education, leprosy control, nature conservation and art.
