Dutch Delftware [Delfts aardewerk], a complete overview

The Gemeente Museum in The Hague recently launched a highly interesting and informative site on  Dutch Delftware, parallel to their exhibition Delftsaardewerk.nl.

The distinctive blue-and-white (or occasionally multi-coloured) tulip vases, jars, jugs, dishes and ornaments produced since the seventeenth-century in the Dutch town of Delft are a major national and international icon of Dutch culture and identity.

The multi-institutional open-access website address every facet of the fascinating world Dutch Delftware, from the intricate processes involved in its manufacture right through to the huge historic trade in the product.

The website is a dynamic platform for the expansion and refinement of knowledge about this important aspect of the Dutch cultural heritage. It puts the Dutch Delftware collection of the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag on-line (to be followed later by other museum and private collections).

Delftsaardewerk.nl is well designed and friendly to navigate through. A nice feature of the site is that as a registered user you can upload a picture of your own Delftware and have it evaluated by other users on authenticity.

All in all a well constructed and sound source of information on Dutch Delftware. The only negative comment we have on the site is that it is in the Dutch language alone. We truly hope that an English version will be launched within the near future.
