Google disregards the dead

The George Glazer Gallery, specialised in antique maps and prints, received a rather amusing letter from Michele Vidano, director of marketing at Google.

The letter contained a US$ 100 coupon towards the purchase of Google AdWords and was addressed to Joannes de Laet, editor at the George Glazer Gallery. See letter >>

The proprietor chuckled with delight when the letter arrived in the mail. Why ? Well, Joannes de Laet was the former Director of the Dutch West Indies Company and died in 1649. As Helen Glazer, creative director of the gallery stated : As a globally minded businessman, we think Joannes de Laet would have appreciated the coupon.

What ‘mislead’ Google’s computer-generated letter software was the following description of a 17th century map of Florida

Joannes de Laet (1593-1649) (editor)
Hessel Gerritsz (1580/81-1632) (cartographer and probably engraver)
Florida, et Regiones Vincinae [Florida and Vicinity]
from Beschrijvinghe van West-Indiën
Leiden: 1630

Awesome! I found this little tid bit when I did a quick search for Michelle Vidano, since my company had just received three such coupons, addressed to people who had once been on advisory boards. Your story is much more interesting though. Thanks for sharing.
