ArtMarketInsight reports that judging by the last Sotheby’s and Christie’s London sales of combined Old Masters & 19th century art, it would seem that the old and reliable have surpassed the new and more speculative.
The total revenue from the two auction houses’ of Old Masters works amounted to nearly £39m, a million more than they both earned from the Contemporary Art sales the previous month.
By nature Old Masters are not so sensitive to fluctuations in the market. It is a fully developed market, mature and has withstood many speculative investment trends.
