Waarom verzamelt men oude economisch waardeloze effecten ?

Oude effecten zijn zo boeiend om te verzamelen omdat elk stuk niet alleen iets vertelt over de financieel-economische geschiedenis van een land, maar ook over de politiek-economische geschiedenis. Waardeloze effecten zijn de zichtbare bewijsstukken van de wisselvalligheden van de financiële wereld.

Het verzamelen van waardepapieren, oude effecten die in het economisch verkeer van vandaag geen waarde meer hebben, is als het ware spoorzoeken in de geschiedenis, waarbij elk stuk iets prijsgeeft van de sociaal-culturele en financieel-economische historie van een land, een bedrijfstak of de mate van globalisering. Oude effecten zijn toverlantaarn plaatjes van onze ontwikkeling en ze maken ons bewust van de kwetsbaarheid en de wisselvalligheid daarvan.

Verzamelaars ervan zijn dus eigenlijk archeologen die aan de hand van oude documenten een stukje van onze historie bloot leggen. Deze hobby van het verzamelen van deze stukken heet scripofilie, en alhoewel het geen ziekte is, kan aanraking ervan buitengemeen besmettelijk zijn. Het woord, eigenlijk ,,scripophilie”, is een samensmelting van het Griekse woord voor liefde, ,,philos”, en het Engelse ,,scrip” dat staat voor het recht van eigendom.

In 1665 werd, acht jaar nadat Johan Nieuhof was teruggekeerd van zijn reis naar China, een uitgebreid verslag van die reis gepubliceerd door de Amsterdamse drukker Jacob van Meurs. Het boek kreeg de titel: Het Gezantschap der Neerlandtsche Oost-Indische Compagnie, aan den grooten Tartarischen Cham, den tegenwoordigen Keizer van China: waar in de gedenkwaardighste Geschiedenissen, die onder het reizen door de Sineesche Landtschappen (...) sedert denjare 1655 tot 1657 zijn voorgevallen (...) verhandelt worden. Beneffens Een Naukeurige Beschrijving der Sineesche Steden, Dorpen, Regeering, Wetenschappen, Hantwerken, Zeden, Godsdiensten, Gebouwen, Drachten, Schepen, Bergen, Gewassen, Dieren, etc. en Oorlogen tegen de Tarters. Verciert met over de 150 Afbeeltsels, na't leven in Sina getekent.

20 July 1997 marks the four-hundredth anniversary of Franciscus Raphelengius’s death. He may be rembered for several reasons. He lives on first and foremost as the Leiden scholar appointed extraordanry professor of the Hebrew language as successor to Johannes Drusius in 1586. The tangible profit today’s scholar still derives from Raphelengius’s activities is twofold. As the generous benefactor who presented manuscripts to the library, he will not be forgotten, nor on a wider scale in his capacity as the owner of the Academy’s bookshop through which the University was able to purchase considerable quantities of important publcations.

The payer-book Dala’il al-Khayrat by the Moroccan mystical activist Abu Abdallah Muhammad b. Sulayman al-Jazuli (d. 870/1465) is one of the most successful books in Sunni Islam, after the Qur’an itself. It is known from the Islamic West, where it was written more than five hundred years ago, till far in South-East Asia, and everywhere in between. There must be many thousands of manuscripts of it all over the world, and many hundreds in printed versions. The numerous editions which are currently available in the entire Islamic world prove that the book has lost nothing of its appeal. Most manuscripts and all printed editions of the Dala’il al-Khayrat are provided with two illustrations, showing either elements of the Prophet’s Mosque or views of the Great Mosque of Mekka and the Prophet’s Mosque in Medina. Why these illustrations came to be inserted into al-Jazuli’s prayer-book in the first place, and how they changed from one representation into another is the subject of the present paper.

Despite the fact that these accounts, as well as records of thousands and hundreds of thousand of manuscripts in the libraries of Cordoba, Cairo, and Baghdad, point to an early production date, the beginnings of the Arabic illustrated book are marked by uncertainty and cannot be easily identified. Many have been lost : not a single dated illustrated Arabic book survives from before the year 1000 and the earliest surviving visual evidence consists of isolated leaves among the large motley body of undated fragmentary works on paper discovered at Fustat. The scarcity of early surviving works and the discrepancy between documentary and material evidence have led scholars to question the reliability of the documentary evidence and even to cast doubt on whether there was any significant production of illustrated manuscripts before the eleventh century.

The Age of Discovery denotes the period from the late 15th century to the early 18th century. Enormous scientific and intellectual advances were made in Europe at this time, paving the way for the Enlightenment of the 18th century. The discoveries of new lands, notably by Columbus and Vespucci in the years around 1500, revolutionised the British and European worldview. Pioneering naturalists such as Maria Sibylla Merian and Mark Catesby made expeditions to the New World in order to study live specimens of many new and exotic species at first hand. Trade routes opened up, and products from newly discovered lands began to be imported to Britain and Europe.

Jan Sluijters is een bekende naam in de Nederlandse Moderne Kunst. Menigeen kent zijn fel gekleurde luministische en expressionistische schilderijen. Maar slechts weinigen weten dat hij ook een technisch zeer kundig tekenaar was die, vooral in zijn jonge jaren, als ‘broodillustrator’ vele boeken van sfeervolle plaatjes voorzag.

In België noemt men ze meestal mannekensbladen of kinderprenten, zo ook in Nederland. In Duitsland noemt men ze Bilderbogen of Fliegende Blätter, in Frankrijk imagerie populaire, feuilles volantes of images d’ enfants. In Zweden heeft met het over Kristbref naar de gewoonte om ze in een kofferdeksel te kleven. Deze termen komen grotendeels overeen met de benaming volksprent.
